December 6, 2017

Dear Schiesher Families,

As we say goodbye to 2017 in a couple of weeks, I hope that it has been filled with lasting memories that you can take with you into 2018.  We would like to thank everyone that attended parent/teacher conferences this year.  We appreciate your support and value working with you to support our students.

Community of Kindness
In alignment with our theme this year, all Schiesher students will be creating holiday cards for seniors in Lisle.  We feel that giving back to our community is one way that we can share kindness with others. Our student council members will be communicating this project with each of our classes.

Kindness Paws
One of the ways that students are recognized at Schiesher is through Kindness Paws.  These Paws are given out to students that are seen going above and beyond performing random actions of kindness.
We are very proud of the following students that have received a Kindness Paw:
Lucas C., Ben L., Austin B., Brooke E., Kyndra K., Noemie-Ann S., Isabella S., Zaylen H, Jake L.

Winter Weather
The weather is getting colder, and snow will be here before we know it!   Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately to go outside for recess.  If students want to play in the snow, they must have snow pants and boots along with their coat, hat and gloves/mittens.  If students are not dressed appropriately, they will need to stay in the shoveled areas.  Please let us know if you are in need of any outdoor winter clothing for your child as we can help with that.

5Essentials Parent Survey
Teachers and parents across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the Illinois 5Essentials Survey.  You should receive an email from the District regarding the 5Essentials Survey.  As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child's school.  Here is the link for parents to take the survey:  The survey will be open until January 31, 2018.

K-5 Teaching and Learning
What guides daily instruction?
Teachers use a variety of assessments to plan for instruction, set goals and differentiate lessons. These formative assessments can vary in length and can be isolated to one or two concepts or skills so students can demonstrate mastery.  Formative assessments can be observational or anecdotal and can help grade levels identify specific needs for students who need additional help or are ready for extension.

What students are reading matters?
Most of the reading students will encounter in the real world is complex informational text so our K-5 students are reading lots more of it throughout the year!  Informational text explains the natural or social world. There is often specialized or technical vocabulary associated with it and may feature diagrams, charts, tables, photographs or realistic illustrations.

Winter Classroom Parties
Classroom parties will be held before the Holiday Break on Thursday, December 22nd. Classroom parties will begin at 2:15. Parent helpers will be let into the classrooms at 2:00 so they can prepare for the parties. Please enter through door 13 (small gym). If you aren't in our RAPTOR system, please bring your drivers license and plan on arriving a few minutes earlier.
Schiesher Band and Chorus Concert
The Schiesher Holiday Band and Chorus Program will take place on Wednesday,  December 20th, at 2:30 and 6:30 pm.

The Schiesher 4th and 5th grade Chorus will perform on Monday, December 21st, at The Arbor Place of Lisle.  Students should wear something with red, green and/or white with nice jeans, pants or skirt (no sweats, please).
Lost and Found
We still have some items in our Lost and Found.  If your child is missing anything, please feel free to come on in and look to see if it has been found.  All items not claimed by winter break will be donated.

On behalf of the entire Schiesher staff, we wish you all a wonderful fun-filled break and a Happy New Year!

Kind regards,

Melissa Payne
