National Honor Society

The National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, the National Honor Society serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.

What is the purpose of the Lisle High School Chapter?

The purpose of the Lisle High School Chapter is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of Lisle High School. The LHS Chapter participates in several leadership and service activities throughout the academic year including a peer tutoring program, several fundraisers, and assisting with LHS events.

Who can become a member?

Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student. The Faculty Council selects and reviews students for membership based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members must continue to demonstrate these qualities throughout their high school career. To be eligible for selection to this chapter, candidates must have been in attendance at Lisle High School for a period of at least one semester. Candidates eligible for selection to this chapter shall have a minimum weighted cumulative grade point average of 3.25 by the end of their 4th semester of the sophomore year. Students who meet the scholarship requirement will have an opportunity to complete a form detailing their accomplishments in and commitment to service, leadership, and character. All forms submitted for consideration will be evaluated by the Faculty Council. After careful review, a list of selected candidates will be formulated for the principal's approval.

Membership Selection

Every school year in the fall, the Athenia Chapter of Lisle High School's National Honor Society undertakes a process to select new members. This is a privilege bestowed upon students by the faculty of the school, and not considered a right inherent to any student. Technically, students do not apply for membership in NHS. Instead, students wait to be invited to provide further information to be used by the Faculty Council to support their candidacy for membership. Membership is granted to those students selected by the Faculty Council under the terms established at the local level and based on the provisions of the national constitution (NHS Handbook). Each chapter has the authority to establish local requirements above minimum requirements established by the national NHS organization.

Inevitably, some candidates are not selected.  If a student requests more information about non-selection, they are invited to contact the adviser, Mrs. Becky Schwartz. This process is designed to give the student necessary feedback about the reasons for non-selection as a growth opportunity.

The members of the LHS Faculty Council understand the importance of exercising their responsibility in the most professional and objective manner possible. They base their selection decisions on the facts provided by the student candidate. Evidence omitted from the student's candidacy form can not be offered to the Faculty Council after the fact. There is no appeals process beyond the Faculty Council's decision. The national office of NHS and the NASSP have no authority to review or overturn the judgment of any faculty council regarding the selection of individual members to local chapters.

What are the Four Pillars of NHS?

Scholarship: Students must have a cumulative GPA of a B, 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence.

Service: This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character: The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.

What are my obligations as a member of NHS?

Students who accept membership and are inducted into the chapter should be aware of the time and commitment involved with this honor. Members are expected to attend all meetings. Members must also participate in chapter and individual service projects to benefit the school and community.

When will meetings be held?

Mrs. Schwartz will make every effort to hold monthly meetings, usually on Tuesdays or Thursdays, before OR after school depending on a student's schedule, work obligations, sports/extracurricular practice. It is the members responsibility to attend.

Can service projects and volunteer hours still happen?

Yes! We will do our best to find opportunities for individual and small group service projects. Please inform the officers of any appropriate volunteer opportunities. If you are not comfortable volunteering and completing service hours due to COVID, please let Mrs. Schwartz know ASAP.
