LJHS Science Olympiad Team

Olympians Soar to New Heights

LJHS Science Olympian Team Grabs State 2nd

The Lisle Junior High School Science Olympiad Team traveled to the University of Illinois for the Illinois State Finals of Science Olympiad on Saturday, April 26th.  The team placed 2nd out of 20 qualifying schools in the Class A division and 9th out of the 39 in the combined Class A and Class AA divisions.

 

Team members won an impressive eight medals!

 

1st Place Medals:

Jay Sanders and Forrest Anderson in Balloon Launch Glider

Greg Dzuricsko and Neal Kfoury in Science Word

Ryan Twaddle and Robbie Dean in Scrambler

Najid Ali and Neal Kfoury in Oceanography

 

3rd Place Medals:

Greg Dzuricsko and Robbie Dean in Ecology

Betsy McKay and Cassie Parks in Crave the Wave

Andrew Mogensen and Ryan Twaddle in Reach for the Stars

 

4th Place Medal:

Connor Liss and Shannon Tai in Write It Do It

 

 Olympians Travel to Champaign

 

Neal Kfoury and Greg Dzuricsko not only placed first in the Class A division for Science Word, but they also placed first overall  in the combined Class A / AA with 17 words correct. Science Word is a password-like game in which one person gives a two-word clue to a science vocabulary word and the teammate tries to guess the word. 

 

Najid Ali and Neal Kfoury  not only placed first in the Class A division of Oceanography, but  placed second overall in the combined Class A / AA.

 

Jay Sanders and Forrest Anderson grabbed the title for Balloon Launch Glider in Class A  and second overall in the combined Class A / AA with flight times of 2 minutes 20 seconds and 2 minutes 40 seconds.  In the competition a 2.6 gram balsa wood glider is perched atop a helium balloon and then launched from just under the ceiling.

 

Ryan Twaddle and Robbie Dean not only placed first in the Class A division of Scrambler, but fourth in the combined Class A / AA. The Scrambler competition requires participants to stop a wheeled vehicle with an egg attached to the front at a prescribed distance.  The distance however is not known until the day of the competition.
