Lisle Depot Field Trip
Third Graders Learn about Life in Early Lisle
The third grade classes had a wonderful trip to the Lisle Depot Museum on Thursday, May 8, 2008. During this field trip, we get to step back in time. With the help of volunteers from the Lisle Heritage Society, we are able to experience the Blacksmith Shop, the Train Depot, life in an original Lisle home, and an old fashioned schoolhouse. While at the museum, the students listen to members talk about what life was like in the early days in Lisle. They get to see a woman cooking in the summer kitchen and enjoy a cookie from her. They watch a blacksmith create a metal hook for the classroom and work the bellows on the chimney stack. In the depot, they find out that the train master lived and worked in the same building. The train master functioned as the center of communication in the early days. He not only sold tickets for the train, but was the postmaster as well. One of the highlights of the day is when the students pretend that they are attending a one room schoolhouse. Their teacher becomes the schoolmarm and they follow the rules and learn the subjects of that time. After lunch, many of the classes played an old fashioned game, like Buzz, General Post, or Drop the Handkerchief.
This field trip ties in nicely with the third grade curriculum. Our Social Studies Unit is entitled Communities. Throughout the year, we study early settlers, pioneers, and our own community of Lisle. We also discuss the early transportation and how important it was for the westward movement. We had a lot of fun and learned a lot about our community.
