6th Grade General Science

Course Description and Calendar

This is a general science course which challenges students to examine the world around them from a scientific perspective.  An emphasis is placed on understanding and the utilizing a scientific approach to discovery.  Each unit will focus on essential understandings which provide a basis for further study in science.  The table below provides an overview of the units throughout the year.

Unit Title Calendar Description
Unit #1
Being a Scientist
September & October

Students will be able to:

  • utilize skills needed to be a successful sixth grade scientist.
  • conduct accepted methods of performing scientific inquiry.
  • explain what is similar and different about observational and experimental investigations.

These skills and methods will be reinforced throughout the year and their science education.

Unit #2
Life Science - What is Life?
 November & December

Students will be able to:

  • understand the characteristics of a living thing.
  • understand and apply concepts that describe how living things function, adapt and change.
  • evaluate if an object is living or nonliving.
Unit #3
Environmental Science - Ecology
January & February

Students will be able to:

  • understand and apply concepts that describe how living things interact with each other and with their environment.
Unit #4 -
Environmental Science - Environmental Issues
February & March

Students will be able to:

  • identify environmental issues that are affecting the natural interactions of living things with their environment.
  • assess the impact humans have on the environment.
Unit #5 -
Technological Design
April

Students will be able to:

  • know and apply concepts that describe the interaction between science, technology and society.

Unit #6 -
Astronomy
April & May

Students will be able to:

  • know and apply concepts that explain the composition and structure of the universe and Earth's place in it.

Unit Focus - Essential Questions

Each unit in 6th Grade General Science has a specific focus that is related to State and Local Educational Standards for Science.  The unit foci are presented to the students in the form of an Essential Question that is discussed and referenced throughout the unit.

In the table below, the title of each unit and the unit's Essential Questions are provided:

Unit 1 – Being a Scientist

What is Science?

How are YOU a Scientist?

Unit 2 - Life Science

What is Life?

How do you know if something is living?

Unit 3 – Environmental Science: Ecology

Why could Science be defined as Connections?

Unit 4 - Environmental Science: Issues

Why Should We Care About the Earth We Share?

Why Do We Need a Solution to Pollution?

Why Must We Protect Biodiversity?

Unit 5 – Technological Design
