Songwriter Michael J. Miles teaches students how to create original music compositions

Each year, the 5th graders at Schiesher present a music program along with their D.A.R.E graduation ceremony in May.  This year, the students had the opportunity to participate in songwriting workshops in music class in order to compose their own song that will presented at this program.  The H.S.O. funded these workshops, led by folk musician, teacher, and songwriter Michael J. Miles. To begin the process, Mr. Miles sent the students surveys asking them to write some ideas about friendship, bullying, peer pressure, and what they had learned in D.A.R.E.  These ideas were compiled onto posters, which the students were able to see on the first day of the workshop.  Each class picked some of their favorite phrases from the posters which were then used to compose the lyrics of the song.  Students also made choices regarding the tempo, dynamics, and structure of the song.  On the second day of the workshop the student each received a copy of the sheet music.  The song was rehearsed and recorded accompanied by Mr. Miles and two fifth grade students on the guitar.  In art class, the students designed CD covers that will be used for the copy of the song that each one of them will receive.  The premier performance of “Do You Dare?” will take place at the 5th grade D.A.R.E. graduation and music program on Tuesday, May 26th.
