Imagine being
six years old an taken from your family to train for battle because
the earth is going to be attacked by aliens and you are supposed to
save the world. Welcome to the world of Ender Wiggins. This sci-fi
novel will keep you gripped from start to finish.
Feed -
Anderson
A teenage boy
and his relationship with a girl with a vastly different world
perspective. They live within a futuristic world where technology
has merged electronics and telecommunications with the human mind,
something
which plays a major role in the novel.
Gallows Hill -
Duncan
Sarah’s role as
a fortune teller at the school fair is all a game, but when she
peered into the crystal ball, disturbing images suddenly appear
that she could not possibly know … and when her visions begin
coming true, she is labeled a witch.
I Know Why the
Caged Bird Sings- Angelou
The
autobiography of Maya Angelou, poet laureate, Oprah’s favorite
author and close friend, begins her youth in the South and traces
her life through adolescence. Humorous, sad, traumatic details of
childhood, home spun philosophy, racism and sexual abuse make this
a timeless story.
If You Come Softly
- Woodson
Elisha and
Jeremiah attend Percy Academy, a private school where neither quite
fits in. Ellie is wrestling with family demons, and Miah is one of
a few African Americans. The two of them fall in love but are
hesitant to share their happiness with their friends and families.
At the end, life makes a brutal choice for them.
The Miracle Worker
- Gibson (required for Honors English I)
The endless
patience and fortitude of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, made the life
of Helen Keller, who was mute, deaf and blind from infancy, one of
inspiration and triumph over seemingly impossible odds.
Summer of My
German Soldier - Greene
An unlikely
friendship between a German soldier and a Jewish girl could not be
condoned during WW II when patriotic feelings were running high,
especially after the soldier escaped from prison camp.
Tangerine -
Bloor
So what if he's
legally blind? Even with his bottle-thick, bug-eyed glasses, Paul
Fisher can see better than most people. No one ever listens to
Paul, though--until the family moves to Tangerine where even a
blind, geeky, alien freak can become cool. Who knows? Paul might
even become a hero!
