Tying Up Loose Ends and Summer Relaxation
As the year quickly
draws to a close, the LRC was the hub of activity as students
worked feverishly to complete their end of the year projects. Our
sixth grade social studies classes worked on their ethnic projects
researching information from the LRC collection and then creating a
“Movie Maker” presentation that included pictures, music, and
narration.
Ms. Stevens's and Ms. Nelson's classes worked on their newspaper
projects.
The thundering hooves of Paul Revere’s horse could be heard as Mr.
Marino’s seventh grade AT literature class concluded their Johnny
Tremain unit of study as they compared the actual events
of Paul Revere’s historic ride with that depicted in Longfellow’s
famous poem concerning the midnight ride.
Everything from rock n’ roll, fashion, the moon landing, and the muscle cars, to the Vietnam War became the center of interest for the eighth graders for the past two months. Eighth grade language arts classes completed their research project of the 60’s reading, taking notes, outlining, citing, and then preparing an oral presentation to share their findings with their peers through their final speeches. Mr. Marx and Mrs. Marino presented their final picture book PowerPoint to all of the eighth grade social studies classes. With the picture book, The Wall by Eve Bunting, the historical focus of the presentation was the U.S. involvement in Vietnam and the Vietnam War Memorial. The timeline of events were accompanied by a rock and roll soundtrack, photographs, and a background history of the memorial. Mrs. Stamper-Stevenson, math teacher from LSHS, worked with Mr. Kim’s math classes using Geometer Sketchpad. Mrs. Stamper-Stevenson introduced the students to the logical sequence of math classes offered at LSHS using the computer program . Mrs. Matariyeh’s diversity class worked on their final projects in the LRC computer lab. Our science experts in Mr. Prichard’s classes explored the effects of global warming on animals around the world and worked on their portfolios.
84 thumb tacks...162 checkers stacked up from floor to ceiling
in the display case...117 straight pins...200 candy corns...136
spaghetti noodles...83 M&Ms...and 43 circular scrubbing pads
end-to-end across the hallway
It was a
recipe for fun ...and logic using our fingers, hands, and feet to
help with logically computing our estimation! Each day a new
estimation puzzler was placed in the display case along with a
verbal clue….
...and each day the names of the five closest student guesses along
with the two closest staff guesses were posted as daily winners.
Students whose names were posted had their names entered in the
prize raffle drawing. Any student or staff member who had their
names posted a minimum of four times received one of our crowd
pleasing favorite “goody” bags. Raffle winners: Goda Inokaityte,
Moriah Jamison, Elena Pivek, and Renee Smith received gift cards to
Borders. A total of twenty students and staff earned a contest
“goody” bag.
We hope you
participated in one of the LRC’s many contests and programs
throughout
the 2008-09 school year.

We’ll be back next September with a full slate of new puzzlers,
contests, and activities...along with a few of our favorites from
the past. You won’t want to miss out on the excitement next
time!
We added almost eight hundred new books to the LJHS library during the school year bringing our total to over 12, 000 titles. Mr. Marx and Mrs. Marino hosted a breakfast for our LRC student assistants to thank them for all of their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Without their help before school and during study hall we would not be able to offer as many programs as we do. This year’s assistants included: Colton Andrews, Hayley Belina, Rachel Birkley, Sara Clifford, Abbey Corona, Erin Johnson, Kendra Schafer, Elizabeth Sullivan, and Lori Taylor. While the LRC was closed the final three weeks for book check-outs, we remained open for class projects and computer lab usage. We inventoried our entire collection, added bookshelves, rearranged our collection, and checked through our magazine collection all in preparation of the 2009-10 school year. We have some exciting plans for next year, so we hope you take full advantage of all the opportunities offered in the LRC.
