Eighth Grade Language Arts Course Description

EIGHTH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS

BASIC TEXT:  Writer's Choice

***All issued texts must be kept covered.***

REQUIRED MATERIALS:  Appropriate text; pen; loose-leaf binder, trapper, or folder (no spiral notebooks for homework assignments); loose-leaf paper; journal; folder/notebook; and assignment notebook.

CURRICULUM:

  • Grammar
  • Capitalization
  • Punctuation
  • Sentence structure
  • Parts of speech
  • Usage

Spelling and vocabulary

Composition and manuscript form

  • Paragraph development
  • Descriptive writing
  • Narrative writing
  • Expository writing
  • Advanced writing practices (research)

Oral communication

PURPOSE:  To develop a thorough understanding of the basic elements of grammatical functions; to improve student knowledge and usage of the basics of writing/composition; to develop student capabilities in advanced writing applications. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  To have all required materials and texts for class; to have all homework completed and handed in on time; to be in class and seated when the tardy bell rings; to make up all assignments in the agreed time after an absence; to keep all folders/notebooks and assignments up to date.  

BASIS FOR GRADES:  Homework and class assignments; quizzes; tests; and extra credit when offered (rarely).  No grades are weighted. 

GRADING PERCENTAGES:  93-100=A; 85-92=B; 75-84=C; 67-74=D

LATE WORK:  one day = 75% credit; two days = 50% credit; three days or more late = B.E.A.R.S. credit and possible referral.
