LISLE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL READ 180 PROGRAM

READ 180 is a research-based reading intervention program, published by Scholastic, Inc. It is designed to help struggling readers experience a 180 degree turn around in reading achievement.  The READ 180 program at Lisle Junior High School builds essential reading and writing skills through a variety of supported-reading experiences.

Our program

  • Gives individualized reading and writing instruction
  • Provides practice and application of skills
  • Supports students as they progress to working at grade level
  • Motivates students to become lifelong readers and learners

The students in our program will participate in four small-group rotations.  This is in addition to whole-class activities at the beginning and end of our class period.

Daily Procedure:

Whole-class literary instruction (15 minutes)

Small-group rotations (18 minutes each)

  • Small-group reading instruction
  • Individualized instructional reading (computer usage)
  • Small-group writing and grammar instruction
  • Independent reading (novels and audio books)

Whole-class wrap-up (5 minutes)

Teacher-Directed Instruction provides support in comprehension, word study, vocabulary, grammar and writing.  Students will interact daily with teachers through whole-group, small-group, and one-on-one instruction.

Instructional Reading Software Topic CDs deliver individualized reading instruction through a variety of activities that build fluency, word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension, and spelling skills.

Independent Reading allows students to read grade-level literature with the support of a reading coach when they use the READ 180 audio books.  Students also have the opportunity to read independently by using the READ 180 paperbacks.  These paperbacks come in various lengths and genres at each reading level.
