February Highlights....King Arthur, the Great Depression, and Super Heroes!
6th grade happenings for the month of February included Ms. Stevens’ language arts classes using the computer lab to type their descriptive paragraphs, “My Most Prized Possession.” Mr. Marx presented a new King Arthur graphic novel, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, to the 6th graders as a PhotoStory to kick off their Middle Ages unit. The presentation included narration by Mr. Marx, Mr. Marino, Mr. Wiertel, Mrs. Marino, and nine eighth graders: Nathan Birkett, Ben Buchelt, Kevin Coppin, Jeremy Glavonovits, Billy Loconsole, Ian Parks, Steven Sonnefeldt, Max Tarasewicz, and Ryan Wood. The 6th grade language arts classes researched super heroes, both in textbooks and on-line, as they prepared to write a persuasive paragraph trying to convince the “comic book hall of fame” that their super hero should be included in the “hall.” Ms. Stevens AT literature class created mini-folktales that included the story’s morals.
7th grade social studies classes used the LRC computer lab to research the history of China, collecting information and photos to then be used in the classroom as they created a class timeline depicting the history of China.
The 8th graders finished their autobiographies in February during their language arts classes. Mr. Marx and Mrs. Marino’s historical PowerPoint timeline presentations continued as they presented the picture book, The Dust Bowl. The presentation focused on the Great Depression, the Stock Market Crash, and the Dust Bowl, a ton of facts, and period music. The 8th grade social studies classes later returned during the month to browse through the many books and reference materials as they researched the 1920s and the Great Depression. Using their collected information they wrote their expository paragraphs of the period including citation information.
Sixty-one new titles were added to our collection during the month. On our “Featured” bookshelf this month we highlighted inventions, the Middle Ages, the Great Depression, and as we celebrated February, as “Black History Month”, we featured, throughout the LRC, our newest titles that focused on black history and authors.
Our two week long JEOPARDY Tournament is just around the corner...we currently have twenty-nine students registered. Remember that registration ends Friday, March 5th...registration is limited to the first forty students.
