Stossel in the Classroom announced the winners today of its second annual student essay contest.

The top prize went to Madeline Peltzer, a 13-year-old homeschooler from Laveen, Arizona.  Second place was awarded to Spencer Kolssak, a 15-year-old homeschooler from Winnetka, Illinois.

Jake Haseltine from Lisle High School was named a Finalist in the contest.

Stossel in the Classroom, a project of the non-profit Center for Independent Thought, provides free curriculum materials to teachers, using video clips from John Stossel television shows and specials.  Stossel hosts a weekly program on the Fox Business Network.

Students aged 13 to 18 were asked to write an essay about Politicians' Promises Gone Wrong, after viewing John Stossel's Fox News special on that subject.

There were 3,944 essays submitted by students around the country, with 225 essays chosen as prize winners.  Winners won cash prizes ranging from $50 to $1,500.  The top two winners will receive all-expense -paid trips to New York City for a taping of one of Stossel's weekly shows, in addition to their cash awards.

Economics teacher Bruce Howell submitted Jake's essay for this contest.  Mr. Howell said, "I am really proud of Jake's accomplishment.  He is a great writer and a very good student of Economics.  However, I did tell Jake that I was disappointed that we weren't going to get to hang out in New York with Mr. Stossel."
