Tate Woods Second Graders Take Part in TECH 2012
"2012 Students for the Information Age” demonstration on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the State Capitol Building in Springfield, IL. At TECH 2012, they joined other teams of students and teachers from 70 schools throughout Illinois to demonstrate how they're using technology in the classrooms to prepare for an information-based society.
During the event, they presented a project completed with peers overseas in Wales to raise awareness of environmental issues. Students used informational texts to answer self-imposed questions and conferred with British peers via Skype live chats. They then combined their knowledge and made collaborative PowerPoints, videos and Photo Stories to share new understandings of environmental issues such as deforestation, ocean pollution, renewable energy, saving energy and recycling. The second graders learned a lot about the environment while experiencing global collaboration and practicing valuable Language Arts Standards involving informational texts, researching, speaking/listening, and writing. Representing their class at the Springfield demonstration were second graders Connor Ryan, Gabi Unabia, and Abby Zellak, along with their teacher Mrs. Megan Altic.
