As much as 80 percent of electronic waste makes its way overseas where precious metals are removed by hammers, gas burners and bare hands, which results in lead and mercury being leaked into the air. Although it is cheaper to ship e-waste overseas, the long-term effects can be devastating.

Area residents are encouraged to bring their electronics and other waste items to “Sustainable Saturday in Lisle” from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 in the parking lot adjacent to the Dan and Ada Rice Center on the campus of Benedictine University.

The event is sponsored by DuPage County, the Village of Lisle, Electronics Manufacturers Recycling Management Company (MRM), Vintage Tech Recyclers of Plainfield, School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education (SCARCE) of Glen Ellyn and Benedictine University.

Items accepted include: electronics (such as computers, televisions, monitors, telephones, VCRs, video games, stereos, fax machines, copy machines and printers); ink jet cartridges; eye glasses; hearing aids; worn American flags; cell phones; bicycles; and sealed lead acid batteries (for cars, motorcycles, boats, lawn mowers, sump pumps and sport vehicles). Other items can be found at
