President’s Message
Welcome to the Lisle Choral Parents Organization! A new school year has begun and we’re very excited about the excellent choir program in Lisle District 202. If you are new to the choir program this year, or have not read our newsletters in the past, the Lisle Choral Parents Organization is devoted to providing parental support for all of our choirs, elementary through high school. We have several fundraisers during the school year, helping to provide the choirs with choir robes, scholarships, field trips, etc. We will begin our fundraising activities this year with the Choral Picnic on Thursday September 25 at 5:30. Additional fundraisers this year will be the high school/junior high cheesecake sale, Jewel Shop’N’Share days, Culvers’ fundraiser nights, and our very successful Big Raffle. There are many opportunities to volunteer to help with these events, and we are always very grateful for the parents’ support. In addition, if anyone would like to become a LCPO board member, or attend one of our meetings, we meet at the high school the first Monday of the month at 7:00pm. We’d love to see you there! We are particularly in need next year of a treasurer, as our current treasurer, Donna Modaff, will be retiring.
We know that everyone will enjoy all the wonderful concerts and events this year, and hope to see as many of you as possible at our kick-off event, the Choral Picnic, on September 25.
Nadine Reed,
President, LCPO
Committee Board members: Nadine Reed, Donna Modaff, Cathy Puccini, Mary Loconsole, Beth Corrigan & Kathy Chatman

Director’s Report
Pat Kerback
I hope this newsletter finds all of you off to a good start to the school year. The first day of school is always exciting and I look forward to it every year. The challenge is to keep that feeling going throughout the year. There are always obstacles that we must overcome; teachers, parents, and students. As the year progresses everyone’s schedule becomes busier, filled with obligations, especially as the holidays approach. Teachers too have family and community commitments that must be fulfilled. It is my hope that each of us honor the pledge that we took the first day of school to be responsible to our “team mates” and be present at those opportunities for performance that were included in the calendar which was given out at Open House and also sent home with students.
Already I can see that I’m going to have a terrific year in choir with all of my students, 6 – 12 grades. They are enthusiastic, good musicians, and responsible young people and I commend them.
The Lisle Choral Boosters have been planning for the Concert/Picnic for a month. It is because of their time commitment to choral music in Lisle that this event is as well planned and successful as it is. The Concert/Picnic has undergone many transformations in the last few years and we hope we have come to the point where we have “gotten it right”. I appreciate all of the parents on the LCPO Board. Many of those parents will be retiring next year and new parents will be needed to replace them, as difficult as that will be! Please consider giving your time to this worthwhile organization. All of us have busy schedules and have made the LCPO at least one of our priorities. Next year will be a trip year for the high school choirs. We have a chairman for that event, THANK YOU, Kate Blunk, but other parents are needed as the trip always involves a large amount of planning.
In closing, I hope to see all of you at the concerts this year. Your children fully realize when you are not in attendance – it shows in their faces and demeanor. Best wishes to all for a wonderful year!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for enrolling your child in chorus this year. I know that as parents there may have been many reasons that you decided to do this. Perhaps you were looking for a way to help your child meet new people and make more friends. Maybe your child is singing all the time at home and you were looking for an outlet for them. Perhaps you enjoy attending the concerts and watching your child have a chance to shine. All of these things are a wonderful part of chorus. What we don’t always think about is the impact participating in the arts will have on other aspects of a student’s academic growth and creativity. A few years ago, an article was published called “Champions of Change: The Impact of Arts on Learning.” I invite you to take a look at this article, which contains several studies of students in American schools and the impact participation in the arts had on their achievement in math and reading, regardless of socioeconomic background. There is a link to the article at:
http://www.artsedge.kennedy-center.org/champions/pdfs/ChampsReport.pdf
I would be happy to provide a hard copy for you as well. To quote Richard Riley, Former Secretary of Education, “If young Americans are to succeed and to contribute to what Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan describes as our ‘economy of ideas,’ they will need an education that develops imaginative, flexible and tough-minding thinking. The arts powerfully nurture the ability to think in this manner.”
Thank you again for the opportunity to share the love of music with your child this year.
