CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

1. Supplies-Students MUST bring supplies everyday to class. Classroom supplies include books, notebooks, pens, pencils and paper.

2. Tardy-Students must be in the room when the bell rings or they will be marked tardy. Please review the high school’s policy on tardiness.

3. Respect-is the magic word and the way of life in my classroom. All activities, discussion, games, actions, etc. are carried out in a way that we respect and care about each other. I will not allow “put downs” in my room or ANY swearing.  Respect includes my behavior towards you.

4. Open communication-Any problem that you may have with the classroom procedures should be discussed with me. If you are unable to talk to me before or after class, time can be arranged before or after school. Many times students will come to me with a personal problem. I am a good listener and I really care if my students are “hurting”.

5. School property- Take pride in your school by taking care of it! Students who do not follow this rule…i.e. get the bright idea to write on desk, walls, posters, etc… will be punished. Hopefully, we will not have to deal with this issue.

6. Restroom passes- You will be allowed to go to the restroom only upon an emergency. In the past, too many students have abused this right. I will determine if the situation is an emergency.

7. Dress Code- Know that I DO enforce the dress code per the student handbook. If you are found in violation of the code you will be asked either to turn your shirt inside out or you will be asked to get a covering of some type. After the first warning you will be formally written up

Course work for the fall of 2009

Traditional

Students are completing a unit on ballads.  After studying the elements of a ballad, the students analyzed contemporary songs and played them for their classmates.  The next unit of study will be the Arthurian legend followed by the study of Anglo-Saxon literature and Anglo-Saxon history.

Honors III

We are starting an Anglo-Saxon literature and history unit which entails the study of  the Old English poem, Beowulf, and Anglo-Saxon riddles. Following the study of the Anglo-Saxons, we will be studying the literature and history of the Renaissance period with a main focus on the Shakespearean plays Macbeth and The Merchant of Venice.

Honors II

Honors sophomores are just beginning a unit on personal speeches.  The speeches need to follow the teacher provided guidelines.  After completion of the speech unit, the class will begin studying The Crucible and the conditions of the 1950's which led up to Arthur Miller's reason for writing the now famous play.

Advice to Parents and Students on Improving Grades:

1.    Pay attention in class and when told to do so, take notes.

2.    Study notes for tests.

3.    Ask questions when necessary.

4.    Bring books, paper and writing implements to class.

4.    Ask for extra help which can be given before or after school or during a study if it coincides with my planning period.

5.    Save all tests to study for the final.
