Grade 6 LANGUAGE ARTS / LITERATURE

POWER STANDARDS

 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of vocabulary through use of context clues and appropriate use in writing.
  2. Identify and analyze imagery, figurative language, and other literacy elements in literature that is read, viewed, written, and / or performed
  3. Use textual evidence to support interpretation and understanding of fiction and nonfiction in writing and discussion.
  4. Explore various methods for evaluating own work.
  5. Organize information into coherent paragraphs with a topic sentence, sufficient supporting detail, and a concluding sentence.
  6. Define and give examples of the eight parts of speech.
  7. Identify and use in writing a variety of sentence structures (simple, compound, and complex).

 

Grade 7 LANGUAGE ARTS / LITERATURE

POWER STANDARDS

 

  1. Use context to figure out meanings of new vocabulary words and use vocabulary in context.
  2. Define and identify literary terminology (i.e. plot, climax, conflict, resolution, setting, theme, characters, point of view, etc.)
  3. Write proper paragraphs that include strong details, examples, and textual evidence in writing.
  4. Use standard, acceptable grammar in writing.  This includes complete sentences, correct spelling, and proper punctuation.  The students would also be able to revise these elements in the process of proofreading.
  5. Evaluate own work to determine if it meets given criteria.
  6. Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the purpose, structure, and elements of nonfiction or informational materials and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.
  7. Identify and analyze the characteristics of literature and the elements of fiction.
  8. Develop compositions (5-paragraph essays) with clear topic development, logical organization, and effective use of detail.
  9. Identify and use in writing a variety of sentence structures (simple, compound, and complex).

 

Grade 8 LANGUAGE ARTS / LITERATURE

POWER STANDARDS

 

  1. Identify and analyze main ideas, supporting ideas, and supporting details in fiction and non-fiction texts using reading strategies.
  2. Demonstrate research skills:  locate key information, evaluate information for purpose, gather information using a note taking system, and organize information to create a final product.
  3. Express ideas using appropriate discussion and oral presentation techniques.
  4. Interpret text beyond a liberal meaning.
  5. Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the purpose, structure, and elements of non-fiction or informational materials and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.
  6. Use paragraphs to create a five paragraph essay.
  7. Consider writing as a work in process. Revise writing by level of detail using vivid and figurative language, organizing ideas, using sentence variety.
  8. Apply knowledge of the parts of speech to improve writing.
  9. Organize coherent paragraphs into advanced compositions.
  10. Use context to figure out meanings of new vocabulary words and use vocabulary in context.
