Exploring Reading

Welcome to Exploring Reading!
Course Description:
Exploring Reading is designed for students who need to further develop their reading skills. Students will be provided with reading instruction to meet their specific needs. This class will use Soar to Success, a research-based reading intervention program, along with other supplemental materials to help students learn to apply comprehension strategies across the curriculum. The four main reading strategies this course will focus on include: making predictions, clarifying, questioning, and summarizing.
In this class students will read fiction and non-fiction literature, participate in reciprocal teaching, and create graphic organizers to accelerate reading growth. In addition to comprehension strategies, this class will also focus on vocabulary development and improving reading fluency.

Blue or black pen
Spiral notebook

Personal reading material – Must be with you everyday!

Goals:
Help students learn to apply and use comprehension strategies across the curriculum
Improve reading fluency
Further develop vocabulary and critical reading skills
Read for pleasure
Student Responsibilities:
Follow the rules according to the student handbook.
Students must bring proper materials to class daily. Failure to do so will result in the deduction of class participation points.
Be on time! You must be in your seat, quiet, and ready to work when the bell rings.
Be respectful! Help your classmates and yourself by respecting the rights of all students to learn.
Homework:
Since this class is used in conjunction with the regular language arts and literature classes there will be no additional homework. All work will be completed in class and all materials for this program will stay in this classroom. However, progress will be monitored regularly through story retellings, oral reading checks, and overall classroom performance.
Grading:
Due to the nature of the class, a final letter grade will not be assigned. Instead a Pass or Fail system of grading will be used. The grade for this class will be based on in class work and class participation. Therefore, your full participation is expected daily.
