January 2018

Dear Tate Woods Families,

Happy New Year!  I hope the winter break was enjoyable.  We are excited to be entering 2018 with such a great group of kids and families at Tate Woods.  Thank you for ALL you do to make our school such a wonderful place!

MAP testing will take place during the week of Jan 16-23rd.  This is a computerized assessment taken three times per year in grades K-5.  The results from this assessment combined with other classroom assessments allow teachers to provide instruction for your child that is targeted toward their specific needs as a learner.  Results will be sent home with your child during the week of Jan 29th.

Social Emotional learning continues to be a focus at Tate Woods.  Learning how to be a good friend, work partner and individual is what we work on through whole group instruction and group conversation, choice time workshop, instructional recess and individual coaching conversations with children.  These goals are equal in importance to academic learning and we treat them as such at Tate Woods.

Throughout this past semester, our students and families have shown kindness to our community in so many ways. You have generously donated toys, clothes, food, items for kindness bags and monetary support to help those in need in our Lisle community and beyond. We can't thank you enough! We are so very lucky to have all of your support.

As a friendly reminder, our Food Pantry  at Schiesher Elementary School will be open all year. If you are in need of non-perishable food items or basic toiletries, please either come in or call the Schiesher office at 630-493-8100. We would like to help in any way that we can. Our intention is to ensure that your participation in this program is regarded as a confidential matter.

Reminders from Tate Woods:

  • Make sure your child is dressed for the cold weather!  We go outside until temperature/wind chill  is 0 degrees. Coat, snow pants, boots, gloves, etc...
  • Please label EVERYTHING!  It makes it so much easier to get lost items back to the rightful owner!  Thank you.
  • Please say thank you to our bus drivers, pick up and drop off staff.  These people work very hard to keep kids safe!  Take a moment to say thanks!
  • If you have a question, please give us a call or email.  We are happy to help!

 Curriculum:

The cold wintery months are upon us and teachers are mindful that students can fall into a school slump this time of year. Here are some ways our daily instruction keeps students engaged!

Mathematics

Students apply and extend their mathematical thinking and engage in the following mathematical practices through math investigations, real world problem solving and collaborative work centers.

1.  Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
2.  Reason abstractly and quantitatively
3.  Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
4.  Model with mathematics
5.  Use appropriate tools strategically
6.  Attend to precision
7.  Look for and make use of structure
8.  Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

English/Language Arts

1.  Teachers consistently engage, connect and make learning relevant.

2.  Authentic reading and writing opportunities occur daily across the curriculum when students read and write about topics of interest to them.
3.  Students are reading their own published writing pieces to classmates and parents.
4.  Classrooms are skyping with famous authors who inspire and empower students to write about issues that matter to them.
5.  Students are using the design thinking model to create prototypes with cardboard, legos and other materials.
6.  Students are learning to navigate and research using a variety of online tools.
7.  Teachers are conferencing with students during reading and writing workshop which provides an opportunity for teachers to connect and check in with each student.
