Lisle Elementary students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities beginning in the fourth grade.
The 5th Grade Beginning Band is an extremely popular activity for Lisle Elementary students, and around 80% of 5th Grade students sign up each year. Mr. Phillip Meyer teaches all band lessons during the school day as well as full band rehearsals on Tuesdays after school. Mr. Scott Gumina assists with the Tuesday after-school rehearsals. The 5th Grade Band performs three concerts per year: one in December, one in March, and one in May.
All students will see and hear each band instrument in a demonstration assembly at the start of the school year. Students will also meet individually with Mr. Meyer for an "Instrument Interview" during which they will talk about what instrument might be best for them, and information will then be emailed home to parents with a recommended instrument for each student.
- Each student will be placed in a small lesson group with other students who play their same instrument.
- Each group will meet once per week for 30 minutes during the school day starting in September.
- Each group’s lesson day will typically remain consistent, but lesson times will rotate from week to week so that students do not miss the same portion of class in consecutive weeks. For example, if Flute Group #1 meets at 10:00 one Tuesday, they might meet at 11:00 the following Tuesday. Monthly lesson schedules are emailed to families and posted in the 5th grade classrooms.
After-School Band rehearsals typically begin in November and continue every Tuesday school that is in session through the end of the school year. These rehearsals are extremely important as they provide a weekly learning opportunity for the full band to rehearse together in the same room. Specific information about these band rehearsals is emailed home to all 5th Grade Band parents in October.
