Dorothy Lau - 2009

In this week's Alumni Spotlight, we catch up with Class of 2009 graduate, Dorothy Lau.

What are you doing now?

Youth Director at the Chinese Bible Church of Maryland (Rockville, MD).

How did Lisle 202 prepare you for this role?

It was so evident that instructors were caring, encouraged and cultivated excellence, and took the time to tend to students’ character development. In the same way, I integrate these methods as I personally mentor and minister to middle and high school church youth in the Washington DC Metro.

What is your advice for current Lisle Lions?

Grow in self-awareness. Be sincere and deliberate in getting to know and understand those around you. The world isn’t as glamorous as it appears, but we can try to make and leave it better than how we entered it.

Who inspired you during your tenure in Lisle 202?

Barb Stamper-Stevenson - My freshman honors geometry teacher who incorporated a healthy balance of tough love and graciousness in her pedagogy. She spent extra hours with me to ensure that I grasped the material, as well as being intentional to get to know me in my time while in school (2005-2009).

Marti Treumper - A sweet woman who treated me—and loads others—as her own children. Even when she may have been overwhelmed or stressed, it was never evident to the students. She was always full of joy, generosity, and compassion.

I look back at their commitments to teaching and am inspired by their longevity and persistence.

What is your favorite memory from being a Lisle Lion?

The team bonding and camaraderie of competing in and cheering on my teammates in the 2008 IHSA Girls’ Track & Field State Meet.
